For Theo

It’s a supreme moment

I suppose,

Strolling down the

Human road

When you realize

The mileposts

That you’ve passed,

Those you see ahead,

Those hidden around

Corners over hills,

Some you know about,

Some unknown

A surprise waiting

To happen,
As I think about

What I’ve done

What I’ve missed,

As I wipe the sweat,

The dust from my brow

Peer into the mists

For things still hid,

The most wonderful

Biggest thing I ever did

Is knowing you

Since we were kids,

Still stepping strong

Arm in arm

Past the sign that reads,

Married forty years.
